But with more people getting outdoors, there are more concerns about safety, especially on the water.   The DWR is responsible for the management of inland fisheries, wildlife, and recreational boating in Virginia. Unlike other state agencies, the department isn’t primarily funded by tax dollars. Instead, it’s funded through the sale of licenses and a federal excise tax on guns and ammunition, among other sources.

Students will need to register for the course in advance. The course will take place at the Leesville Fairgrounds- Exhibit Building on 1235 H M Stevens Blvd at the West Louisiana Forestry Fairground. We cover firearm and hunting safety, wildlife management principles, ethics, game identification and outdoor survival Students must successfully complete a live-fire exercise with both formats. During a Jan. 14 public presentation to the Fisheries and Wildlife Board, state officials noted that expenses have been exceeding revenue for several years. They also cited contributing factors such as inflation and declining license sales. It is no secret that MassWildlife has taken on increased responsibilities over the last 25 years, including stewardship of 226,000 acres of wildlife lands, habitat management activities, and administration of the Hunter Education program. Strangely enough, the agency derives its funding primarily from hunting and fishing license sales and federal excise taxes from the sale of hunting and fishing equipment.
