Fort Collins City Council election: Susan Gutowsky vs Nick Armstrong

Fort Collins City Council District 1 race is the only one on the April 6 ballot with an incumbent facing off against a challenger. Incumbent council member Susan Gutowsky was elected for a partial term in 2019, a few months after council members appointed her to fill the seat left by county Assessor Bob Overbeck. The other candidate is Nick Armstrong, a small-business owner and president of the Maple Hill HOA. His campaign message is largely focused on neighborhood connectivity and the lack of infrastructure that leaves north Fort Collins largely cut off from the rest of the community. Gutowsky is pointing to her experience navigating Fort Collins through the COVID-19 pandemic and her history of advocating for environmental issues as clean, safe, livable neighborhoods.

Fort Collins homeless camping ban: City won t appeal ACLU lawsuit

Editor s note: This story was updated at 12:45 p.m. Thursday to include comments from Fort Collins city attorney. In a split vote, Fort Collins City Council decided against appealing a court ruling related to enforcement of the city s camping ban. Council voted 4-3 to not appeal the recent ruling, which found that Fort Collins Police Services unconstitutionally ticketed a man for sleeping in his car at a rest stop in 2018.  ACLU of Colorado assisted the man, Adam Wiemold, in his appeal of the ticket. When they emerged, three council members said they supported an appeal: Mayor Wade Troxell and council members Ross Cunniff and Susan Gutowsky. As one motivation for the appeal, Troxell cited a need for clarification on the question of voluntary vs. involuntary homelessness.
