At Westwood High, a formula of in-person and online science classes

At Westwood High, a formula of in-person and online science classes Wicked Local Editor s Note: The following was submitted by Westwood Public Schools. Westwood High School science teacher Andrew Miller delivered raw chicken legs to his students’ homes for a dissection project that, in pre-COVID days, would have been done in school. “It did feel a little weird, a little strange, but it was still very interesting to me,” said Westwood High senior Olivia Lee, who dissected the chicken leg in her kitchen while joining Miller and her classmates on Zoom. “I really enjoyed it.” The Westwood High science department has gotten creative this year to keep students involved during the pandemic. Even as teachers prepare for expanded in-person learning this spring, teachers are leveraging virtual tools to facilitate hands-on learning.

Memphis schools allow older students back on campus - Chalkbeat Tennessee

Laura Faith Kebede / Chalkbeat Some middle and high school students in Memphis returned to classrooms Monday, completing Shelby County Schools’ phased plan to reopen buildings nearly a year after the COVID-19 pandemic prompted remote learning. About a fourth of middle and high school students were expected to return Monday. A third of pre-kindergarten and elementary students returned last week. Families have a choice to send children back to campus or to keep them learning from home via live videoconferencing, as they have done since August. The majority of district parents have chosen to stick with remote learning. Charter schools, which educate about 17% of the district’s students, can make their own reopening plans. Several more opened their buildings Monday, such as Freedom Preparatory Academy and Memphis Business Academy, which means nearly all charter schools in the city are offering in-person learning.
