DETROIT – A plan to crack down on drunk driving is advancing in U.S. Congress.
The HALT Act was sparked by the tragic death of a Metro Detroit family of five.
Issam, Rima, Ali, Isabella, and Giselle Abbas
were killed by wrong-way drunk driver while on the way home to Northville from a family vacation in 2019.

What was set to be the city s 17th annual celebration, however, was derailed by COVID-19. Pandemic concerns discouraged service organizations from making their usual raffle ticket sales, large gatherings were a threat to public health, and Crowner s best laid plans were delayed but not laid to waste.
With COVID-19 vaccines now widely available, the threat of the virus has diminished for those vaccinated, and Crowner was able to build upon the previous year s efforts. We ve been working on this for months and really had a lot of it set up for last year, Crowner said. Especially financially, we were in a better position (this year), because we already paid for half the event last year.
