Mums from BAME backgrounds who have given birth in the last two years are being asked to share their maternity care experiences to improve services in region. The Lancashire and South Cumbria Maternity and Newborn Alliance is working with researchers from the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) to conduct an online anonymous survey with an aim to develop strong guidelines around delivering culturally sensitive maternity care and reduce existing inequalities.

£90,000 boost for eye patients in South Cumbria 26/04/2021 Debbie Akrigg clinical nurse specialist at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust with the umOptos machine The care of patients with eye problems is being enhanced by a £90,000 investment in new diagnostic equipment at a South Cumbrian hospital. An Optos imaging machine has been bought by the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT) to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients from across North Lancashire and South Cumbria who attend the ophthalmology department’s macular unit at Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal. The retinal imaging technology is on a par with specialist centres at hospital trusts in large cities such as Liverpool, Manchester and London.

Morecambe Bay NHS Trust invests £90,000 on new machine

A NINETY-thousand pound investment in new diagnostic equipment has been made at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT). A state-of-the-art ‘Optos’ imaging machine has been purchased by the Trust to improve the diagnosis and treatment of patients from across Cumbria who attend the Ophthalmology Department’s Macular Unit at Westmorland General Hospital (WGH). Linda Williams, Manager of the Ophthalmology Departments at WGH and the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), said: “The Optos machine is fantastic – I can’t praise it highly enough. It’s very user-friendly and gives a greatly enhanced picture of what is going on with a person’s eyes.
