WESTFIELD – Eugene “Geno” Edwin Steger, 74, of Westfield, and formerly of Dunkirk, passed away on Sunday, Jan. 24, 2021, at the Buffalo General Medical Center, Buffalo, NY.
He was born Dec. 17, 1946, in Dunkirk, the son of the late Oscar and Pauline Lewis Steger of Cherry Creek.
Geno had been a maintenance planner for Growers Co-Op Juice Co. in Westfield. In previous years he also worked for Better Baked Foods, Red Wing, and Dunkirk Ice Cream. Through his experiences he developed a craft and passion for designing CAD drawings and assisted with several local projects for friends and businesses.
He was a member of the Westfield American Legion John W. Rogers Post 327, the Westfield Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 118, and the Chautauqua County Corvette Club.

It was an unfortunate scene right before the holidays. A home at 8644 Church St. in Portland was engulfed in smoke around 3:10 p.m. Saturday.
What was very impressive, however, was the massive turnout by local emergency responders. Crews from Dunkirk to Ripley headed to the scene to minimize damage on the structure, located at the corner of Second Street.
Westfield Fire Department came with their ladder truck, which was essential in battling the blaze. In all, at least 10 companies as well as the county were on the scene on this Saturday afternoon. Filled with the smell of smoke, many of these volunteers stayed the full five hours in fighting the good fight.

Smoke filled Church Street in Portland on Saturday afternoon as fire crews from across northern Chautauqua County battled a house fire.
Around 3:15 p.m., crews were called to 8644 Church Street near Second Street for the blaze. The rear of the home was heavily damaged while firefighters, using the Westfield Fire Department ladder truck, were attacking the blaze from the roof.
Flames could be seen at moments coming from the corners of the home as heavy smoke filled the neighborhood.
Departments on the scene included: Portland, Brocton, Westfield, Mayville, Fredonia, Stockton as well as Chautauqua County Emergency Medical Services.
