The greatest plays and moments in Royals history - Part III

The greatest plays and moments in Royals history - Part III Share this story . One thing I like about historical lists is the discussion it brings. It’s hard to get millions of fans to agree about what the top five or even the top ten might be. For younger fans, there might be some recency bias and that’s understandable. If you weren’t alive to witness the individual greatness of a Bo Jackson, a Steve Busby or George Brett, it’s hard to fathom just how spectacular they were. If you’re not of a certain age, you have no idea how heated the rivalry was with the Oakland A’s or the New York Yankees. But the great thing about sports, and baseball, is that it continues to create memorable moments for all of us.

Remembering Don Sutton

Remembering Don Sutton Don Sutton, the Hall of Fame pitcher, has died at the age of 75 after a long fight against cancer. Sutton was a mainstay of the Los Angeles Dodgers pitching staff, but nearly began his career with Charlie Finley’s Oakland As. Imagine an As staff with Sutton plus Catfish Hunter, Vida Blue, Ken Holtzman, Blue Moon Odom, and Rollie Fingers. How did Oakland miss out on Sutton? The story, from Whitey Herzog who tried to sign Sutton for Finley, is that the pitcher wanted a signing bonus of $16,000. But Finley had just paid several bonuses to pitchers and balked at springing for another one.

Longtime St Louis Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon will retire after 2021 season Longtime St Louis Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon will retire after 2021 season

01/15/2021 Mike Shannon’s 50th season calling radio broadcasts for the St. Louis Cardinals will apparently be his last. St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Dan Caesar reports that Shannon, 81, will close out his broadcasting career with the 2021 season. Beginning in 1972, the longtime announcer began calling games on KMOX with legendary play-by-play man Jack Buck following a nine-year playing career with the Cardinals. In those nine seasons, Shannon mostly played third base and right field, compiling a .255 average and .698 OPS with 116 doubles, 68 home runs, and 367 RBI. He played on two World Series championship teams in 1964 and 1967. His playing career was cut short by a kidney disease, glomerulonephritis.
