Many things have surged in popularity over the course of the pandemic, and most of them I can get behind, at least to some extent. You know: meal delivery kits and enormous vats of wine. Totally behind all of that.
Garden gnomes though? Haven’t we had enough of rotund, slightly unkempt men (in fact, one man – you know who you are) with florid cheeks and benign, yet gormless, expressions? Okay, no beard, but even the pointed hat thing has become relevant.
Apparently we haven t. According to recent research by Sainsbury’s Bank, our drastically narrowed worlds have caused people to spend more time in their gardens, and to focus on making those spaces as enjoyable and as welcoming as possible. This means hot tubs, fire pits, barbecues and garden furniture, yes – but it also, bafflingly, that sales of garden gnomes have soared by 20 per cent.
