Fire head: ‘Grant County’s ready’ for fire season Written by Geoffrey Plant on April 9, 2021
Local, state and federal firefighters are gearing up for a potentially very busy fire season, according to Grant County Fire Management Officer Randy Villa, who updated commissioners Thursday about the county’s overall fire preparedness as it heads into what is predicted to be a hot and dry summer.
Commissioners also heard a report from Gila Regional Medical Center interim CEO Scott Landrum, who had good news for veterans seeking care at the county-owned hospital.
Fire season
“We’re in fire season, in my mind,” said Villa, who explained that firefighters recently gathered for their annual collaborative meeting to review resources and readiness, and to coordinate planning efforts among several state and federal agencies, Grant County’s volunteer fire departments and the Silver City Fire Department.

Firefighter Luis Reza’s helmet camera captured the scene at one of two structure fires last Friday, when the Silver City Fire Department responded to back-to-back blazes. Pictured is an abandoned double-wide mobile home that was fully engulfed by flames when first responders arrived on the scene. Firefighter Zach Ore is seen battling the blaze.
A pair of structure fires kept Silver City firefighters busy last Friday evening, with the first call coming in at 6:47 p.m., said Capt. Nate Schwarz of the Silver City Fire Department, who was incident commander for both fires.
“Our first fire was a garage at 1002 West Street, right south of WNMU,” Schwarz said. “It took heavy damage, and we confined it to the structure of origin.”
