Jakob Dylan on how he picks songs for his album:
After a nearly decade-long break, Jakob Dylan and The Wallflowers are back with
Exit Wounds, an album that might be one of their best works to date. The record captures all the classic elements of The Wallflowers’ sound that first catapulted them to fame with “One Headlight,” but captures those classic sounds through the funnel of a fantastic, subtle musical evolution, bringing The Wallflowers to a peak point in their career.
Exit Wounds is full of blues and soul, built up and filled out with resounding organs and subtle guitars that crank out bluesy, Jazz-styled solos and fills. And between the carefully layered classic-rock flavored music that surrounds and envelops this album is continuous proof that Jakob Dylan is his father’s son almost every track tells an exceptionally clever, poetic story, often made more beautiful by the weathered vocals of Jakob Dylan.

It must be a little difficult to be a songwriter and also be the son of one of the best songwriters of all time, but Jakob Dylan has done what he can. In spite of the unavoidable comparisons to Bob Dylan, Jakob’s band The Wallflowers have created at least one perfect song in the past 30 years. It’s more than Sean Lennon has to show for himself. With a magical Tom Petty-esque groove and snarling electric guitar backing, “One Headlight” is the song in The Wallflowers’ catalogue that makes the case for just a smidge of nepotism.
Twenty-five years later, you’d be hard pressed to find a song that levels up to the organ-based groove of “One Headlight,” but there are parts of The Wallflowers’ new album that come close.
