Twilight On The Levee - The Waterways Journal

December 28, 2020 By During this final week of 2020, the Old Boat Column takes a fond look back 50 years to the summer of 1970, when the St. Louis levee was still a lively place for both tourists and residents. Three of the riverboats that occupied the wharf for many years are now but nostalgic, happy memories to those who, like this writer, recall the days when the sounds of a steam calliope and ragtime music reverberated over the cobblestones. In the shadow of the historic Eads Bridge (opened in 1874), at the foot of Washington Avenue, the excursion steamer Admiral was operated by Streckfus Steamers. Originally built at Dubuque, Iowa, in 1907 as the sidewheel railroad ferry Albatross, the boat operated at Vicksburg for the Louisiana & Mississippi Valley Transfer Company, carrying 16 railroad cars at a time.

Planners reject proposal for house in North Boarhunt

A PLAN for a new house in a Meon Valley village has been rejected by councillors. Brothers Keith and Ian Pratt applied for a new house at Glebe Villas on Trampers Lane in North Boarhunt, near Wickham. But planning officers recommended refusal because it was “a new dwelling in the countryside without proper justification”. The scheme attracted local support with 13 letters sent to the city council. Chris Ward, agent for the applicants, said it was s small infill and not contrary to policy. But planning committee chairman Therese Evans disagreed: “If we give permission for this we are opening the floodgates. I understand Mr Ward’s clients wanting to build a house on there. But it is totally against policy. It is not part of the development frontage. We have refused similar applications at the other end of Trampers Lane.”

Care home approved on former pub site

CITY councillors have approved revised plans for a new care home in Otterbourne. Barchester Healthcare applied to alter permission for a 62-bedroom facility and nurses accommodation on the site of the demolished Captain Barnard public house on Otterbourne Road. That scheme was approved in February and now Barchester has applied to add two bedroom and remove the nurses accommodation and provide 21 parking spaces. Planning officer Verity Murphy told the planning committee that the overall height had been reduced and the new plan was similar in design and scale to the one most recently approved. Two mature trees on site will be retained.
