Models for separation of A-G s roles | The Malaysian Insight

SEPARATE the two roles – the office of attorney-general (A-G) and public prosecutor (PP). So urged Dewan Rakyat deputy speaker Azalina Othman Said following the furore and controversies generated by the publication of the memoir of former A-G Tommy Thomas. This is the second call in two weeks for the roles to be separated. The previous call was made by Transparency International Malaysia (TI-M) following the release of Transparency International’s 2020 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) on January 28. Malaysia’s score deteriorated to 51 points in 2020 compared to 53 points in 2019. Malaysia’s ranking in the CPI also deteriorated from 51 in 2019 to 57 in 2020. The drop of six places means that compared to other countries Malaysia is not improving as well as other countries in efforts to fight corruption. According to TI-M, one of the possible reasons for this deterioration is that institutional reforms have stalled, including the separation of powers between the A-G and PP

Innovative policies needed to curb corrupt practices-Akhbar

06 Feb 2021 / 08:42 H. Datuk Seri Akhbar Satar KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 5: Innovative public policies to curb corrupt practices need to be formulated to address Malaysia’s declining position in the Corruption Perceptions Index 2020 (CPI). Datuk Seri Akhbar Satar, who holds the professorial chair at Institute of Crime and Criminology, HELP University, said the decline in terms of ratings clearly reflects the weakness of political will and anti-corruption efforts to address this problem. “High-profile corruption cases and economic crimes that include rampant smuggling activities also worsen the perception that there is a high level of corruption in the public sector in the country,“ he said in a statement here today.

CPI score drops but nation aims to be free of graft by 2023

PETALING JAYA: The government has stressed that it will never compromise with those involved in corruption. In noting the Transparency International Corruption Perception Index (CPI) 2020, the Prime Minister’s Office said that although Malaysia’s score and position dropped compared to the year before, it said that the policies and commitment in combating corruption and improving governance are clear and continuous. It said that as had been mentioned earlier during Pakatan Harapan’s administration, the National Anti-Corruption Plan (NACP) was still being continued to improve public governance and to close the opportunities for corruption in the government administration. The NACP, which was launched by then prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 2019, aims to make Malaysia a corruption-free nation by 2023.

MP SPEAKS | Malaysia s CPI: The never-ending journey

MP SPEAKS | Malaysia’s CPI: The never-ending journey Modified28 Jan 2021, 11:56 pm A - MP SPEAKS | It’s very sad to see our Corruption Perception Index (CPI) score and rank dropped. Just a year ago, we scored 10 points higher and moved six ranks to 47 out of 180 countries. However, it is sad and a pity that we could not sustain them. This is the difference between our tiny nation and the Scandinavians who put in lots of effort to not only sustain their previous score but move on to a better rank. It is a national pride to be labelled as a corrupt-free developing nation.
