LONDON/SEOUL, May 7 (Yonhap) Foreign Minister Chung Eui-yong has said it is desirable for the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden to name a point man on North Korea, noting the appointment, if made, may signal America s focus on engagement with Pyongyang.
Chung made the remarks during an interview with Yonhap News Agency in London on Thursday, amid questions over whether the U.S. would appoint a new special representative for North Korea, a post previously held by former Deputy Secretary of State Stephen Biegun under the former Donald Trump administration.

Biden Must Push President Moon to Get Real on ROK-China Relations
Moon’s reluctance to hold the Chinese government accountable for its misdeeds underscores a challenge for the United States and other allied governments in bolstering regional cooperative efforts supporting a free and open Indo-Pacific region.
Anti-China sentiment is rising in South Korea (ROK), according to recent public opinion polls, social media, and online petitions. Chinese influence on Korean media and the increasing public awareness of Chinese economic and military aggression in the region help explain this phenomenon. Nevertheless, ROK President Moon Jae-in continues praising China for its leadership on regional and global issues and fails to acknowledge both Beijing’s overt territorial aggressions throughout the Indo-Pacific region and its human-rights abuses.

Although a long-awaited foreign ministerial meeting between Korea and Japan has taken place, diplomatic tension between the two countries is not expected to decrease overnight due to their sharp differences on pending issues, according to diplomatic observers, Thursday.
They also said even if their leaders sit down with each other for the first time in an envisioned summit in Britain next month, it will not be easy to see any improvement in relations, currently strained by a feud over wartime history and Japan s decision to release radioactive wastewater from a destroyed nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean.
