Nintendo has announced that Illumination Entertainment CEO Chris Meledandri will serve as an Outside Director for the company. The news was announced via a financial statement released on May 6, 2021. Illumination Entertainment is currently working with Nintendo to produce the upcoming
Super Mario movie, slated for a 2022 release. [Thanks, Hobby Watch!]
Illumination Entertainment created the
Minions and
Despicable Me movies distributed by Universal Pictures. The company previously announced that it was working on a
Super Mario movie in partnership with Nintendo back in 2018. Nintendo itself has also had a long-standing relationship with Universal Group, the most recent of which was the Universal Studios Japan Super Nintendo World amusement park.
Mario Creator Shigeru Miyamoto Is Very Hands-On With the Upcoming Movie
✖
Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto remains closely involved with the making of the upcoming animated movie from Illumination Entertainment. In an interview with Fast Company, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa revealed that the legendary video game developer has been working closely with the studio, to make sure that the end product is faithful to the video games. Miyamoto s involvement in the movie has been mentioned in the past, but this confirmation should help assure fans that the adaptation is in good hands! Unfortunately, the movie won t release until next year, so fans won t be able to judge for themselves for some time.
Nintendo and
Universal Pictures will distribute the film worldwide.
The Wall Street Journal and
The Hollywood Reporter both reported in November 2017 that Illumination Entertainment was close to an agreement with
Nintendo to produce an animated film based on
Super Mario Bros., with talks reportedly ongoing for more than a year. At the time of the report, a person with knowledge of the discussions said that the possible agreement could allow Illumination Entertainment to make multiple films based on the
franchise, but only one film is currently planned. The report also noted at the time that Illumination Entertainment s Mac Guff studio in Paris would animate the film, and that it was in the early stages of development.

The pandemic-forced closure of Universal Studios Hollywood last year came just before the grand opening of the park’s long-anticipated 2020 addition a ride inspired by the two films in “The Secret Life of Pets” franchise. But after a pause of more than a year, guests attending the park’s reopening this week will be able to get their paws, which will be squirted by Universal staff with hand sanitizer just before boarding, on the attraction.
What’s they’ll find in the Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash! is the kind of ride that is something of an endangered species in the theme park world. While there are plenty of clever uses of technology, this isn’t an attraction designed to thrill or emphasize spectacle. The Secret Life of Pets uses screens in complementary rather than starring roles, and when it comes to interactivity, the ride encourages playful silliness rather than more overt game-like techniques.
