Despite Labour’s woes elsewhere, the party exceeded even its own expectations in Wales, holding on to key Senedd seats the Tories had targeted and defeating one of the most well known figures in Welsh politics, the former Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood.
Mark Drakeford, whose cautious approach to the Covid crisis as first minister has proved to be one of the party’s bestselling points, said he would wait until all results were in on Saturday before he turns his mind to forming a new Welsh government.
Speaking after extending his Cardiff West seat’s majority by more than 10,000 votes, Drakeford said: “No party has ever won a majority in the Senedd. It’s very hard to find those extra couple of seats. But we will be far closer to it than I think anybody imagined we would be.
Election day is upon us, and polling stations across Wales have been welcoming voters to decide who will form the next Welsh Government. Polling stations are open until 10pm but unlike previous years, counting and declarations will take place the following day due to rules designed to ensure the safety for those working to count and verify ballots. If you re heading out to vote don t forget to take a mask and your own pen or pencil. We ll be bringing you all the coverage of the counts and the results tomorrow.

Labour s Senedd election manifesto is offering more modest promises than its two main rivals, experts say.
It is based on a cautious prediction about the size of the budget compared to the Conservatives and Plaid Cymru, a Cardiff University study found.
However, all three of the parties proposals lack detail, according to the fiscal analysis research team.
The academics say parties have not said enough about tough choices facing them if are in power after 6 May.
The analysis compared the likely cost of manifesto promises with forecasts for the Welsh Government s budget of around £17bn, the size of which is mostly set in Westminster.
