Please, readers, do not assume from this that Wellington’s trains are in any way unsafe. The system-vulnerability described above has been known about for decades and has been mitigated successfully over this time by applying a blanket 20Km speed limit over the whole station area. A proper fix is in the pipeline, but this has not been achievable before now because of the high cost of completely re-modelling the legacy-trackwork. Money to do this was not available during the many years of chronic underfunding and the speed-limit, though not ideal from an operational point-of-view, has ensured train-safety.
