A 20-year-old man has been arrested in connection to an aggravated robbery involving a knife in central Wellington. On February 2, a man was approached by three unknown people while he was sitting in his silver BMW on Pipitea St in Thorndon at 3.40pm. One of the people presented a knife and the group allegedly stole a small amount of cash and property from the man. They ran into the Thorndon New World car park where they got into a silver Nissan Primera on the upper level and fled the scene via Molesworth St. Detective Sergeant Steve Wescott said police inquiries led to the vehicle, which he said was registered to Nomad gang associates.
Staff clean up after a man allegedly used an axe to damage doors at Parliament.
A man charged over an alleged axe attack on the Parliament building’s doors has kept name suppression after ongoing concerns about his mental health. He had been due to appear in Wellington District Court on Thursday, however he was not well enough to be at court. Judge Bruce Davidson excused his attendance after his lawyer, Marty Robinson, said he had seen a mental health report that said he might be well enough in several weeks. The man was charged with possession of an offensive weapon, intentional damage and resisting arrest.
The judge remanded the man on bail until March. The man’s arrest was part of Operation Emerald, an investigation launched in October after allegations were made. The charges date between 2017 and 2020 and are alleged to have taken place in Wellington and Porirua and name seven victims. There were multiple allegations made after the initial claims were made. Police had urged potential complainants to come forward and speak to them. Wellington City Councillor Tamatha Paul and victims advocate Louise Nicholas had spoken out on behalf of the complainants. This came after a woman, who did not reveal her real name on her social media account, posted allegations against the musicians.
