If you think it’s a given that the phrase “Green New Deal” is toxic to Democrats in Republican-leaning districts, you might want to talk to Chloe Maxmin of Maine. In November, she unseated the state’s GOP Senate minority leader, Dana Dow, with 51 percent of the vote in rural, working-class District 13.
Pandemic creates an opportunity to manage demand for air travel, MSPs told 26/01/2021, 3:34 pm
The Scottish Government should use the ‘opportunity’ created by the coronavirus pandemic to target reduced growth of air travel, MSPs have been told (Jane Barlow/PA)
The coronavirus pandemic is a “tremendous opportunity” to stop the growth of air travel in an attempt to cut emissions, Holyrood’s Climate Change Committee has heard.
MSPs were told that the Scottish Government’s climate change strategy targeting net-zero emissions by 2045 was particularly timid on emissions produced by the aviation sector.
Although several witnesses praised the “bold and ambitious” plan overall, concerns were raised about transport policies and an apparent rejection by the government to try and limit demand for air travel, as recommended by the UK-wide climate change committee advisory body.
Warnings have been issued over the reliance on unproven technology to stop heavy industry emitting carbon into the atmosphere EXPERTS have warned the Scottish Government’s strategy for hitting ambitious climate targets by 2030 is based on “wishful thinking” amid fears there is no plan B in the event untested technology cannot be scaled up. Scottish Government ministers have published their climate change update after MSPs pledged to reduce 1990 levels of carbon emissions by 75 per cent by 2030 on the way to becoming carbon neutral by 2045. But experts have raised concerns that using carbon capture and storage (CCS) and negative emissions technology (NET) to decarbonise heavy industry such as the oil and gas sector are not based on evidence it can be done in time.

The north Highlands already enjoys some of the benefits of the green economy in areas such as offshore wind.
With 2020 having brought a range of unforeseen and pressing challenges for businesses in the north Highlands, we can perhaps be excused this year for losing sight of some of the longer-term issues.
Yet the release recently of the UK governmentâs Energy White Paper and promise that the nation will âbuild back cleanerâ has reminded us that sustainability remains a pressing concern not just for the north Highlands, but across the whole of the UK.
