The University of Oregon has received a $4.52 million grant from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to support a new initiative envisioning a transformative.

January 13, 2021 In 2019, University President Joan Gabel with Minnesota tribal leaders during her inauguration. Executive Vice President and Provost Rachel T.A. Croson announced today that The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded the University a $5 million grant to address racial justice and create more just and equitable futures for all through public humanities.  “This statewide initiative deepens the University’s relationships with our diverse communities, with a focus on developing new knowledge, visions and practices for inclusion and justice,” said Croson. “It will enable progress on multiple elements of our Systemwide Strategic Plan, including advancing the arts and humanities through strategic collaborations, strengthening relations with Tribal Nations, and working in partnership with underserved local communities to enhance access to higher education, among other shared goals.” 

Mellon Foundation Awards $4M Grant to Inheritance Baltimore Project

Kali-Ahset Amen The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation on Wednesday awarded a $4.4 million grant to a team of scholars at Johns Hopkins University that is investigating the history of academic racism in higher education and building a citywide network to preserve Baltimore’s African American history, culture and arts. The project, “Inheritance Baltimore: Humanities and Arts Education for Black Liberation,” will pioneer methods of teaching, research, preservation, and doctoral education that works with Black institutions to foreground the experiences of Baltimore’s Black community and combat institutional racism. The project will also document and preserve the ways African Americans attained knowledge within and outside of academic disciplines.

Mellon Foundation awarded a $2.9 million grant to UC Riverside the Foundation’s largest grant yet to the university meant to support College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences research.   Alfonso Gonzales Toribio, associate professor in the Department of Ethnic Studies, and Claudia Holguín Mendoza, assistant professor in the Department of Hispanic Studies; will lead the “Latinx Futures: The Civil, Cultural and Political Stakes for Southern California Latinx Communities” project under the new Latino and Latin American Studies Research Center, poised to be the first of its kind in Southern California based UC campuses. The center is expected to open February 2021.
