What would have been a raucous kickoff to New Jersey’s comeback summer concert season is instead the final major domino to fall.
The Australian pop band 5 Seconds of Summer announced Monday it has again postponed its North American tour, citing COVID-19 concerns. The roadshow would have included a May 29 date at PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel, rescheduled from 2020.
“As the world continues to reopen more and more on a daily basis, everyone in 5SOS is feeling more positive . everyday!,” the band wrote, in a statement posted to its social media channels. “Moving forward however, it’s still important that we act with safety and caution for all. The concert industry is looking toward the end of summer and into the fall for a return of the big shows, according to industry insiders.
“I think it’s a safe bet that outdoor concerts can return with some normality by early fall, and indoor concerts will follow that trend, probably by September and October,” said Jim Steen, a Manahawkin-based concert promotion veteran with Bowery Presents in New York and Pennsylvania.
“Everybody is being very optimistic for the fall,” said Stan Levinstone, owner of the Haddonfield-based SLP Concerts. “It seems people are looking at September.”
