Avon and Eagle County Police seek participants for Latino Police Academy

The Avon Police Department will be hosting its ninth annual Latino Police Academy. The goal of this academy is to educate and inform Latino community members of the roles and capabilities of the Avon Police Department, Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Vail Police Department and Eagle Police Department. The Academy will take place every Monday starting July 12 and running through Aug. 30. Classes will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. The events provide an inside look at what it is like to work as a police officer in Eagle County. The academy will include eight classes, covering the following topics: July 12: State of the police department, crime in Avon, community policing, Avon Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Bureau and crime scene investigations; including fingerprinting, latent prints, dusting and black lights.

Crowds spanned from Vail Village to Lionshead, enjoying pocket patriotism displays throughout. Visiting from Texas, U.S. Military veteran Chuck Utzman and his wife, Jan, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Vail on Sunday, walking the village and posing for pictures with the stilt-wearing Uncle Sam and Betsy Ross characters. Utzman, who claimed a birthday of May 15, 1929, on his first military registration card so he could go to Japan with the U.S. Army in 1947, went on to fight in both the Vietnam War and the Korean War, as well. He took part in a winter training in Camp Hale in the 1950s, and returned to Eagle County a little more than a decade later to try out the skiing at Vail.

Gypsum man charged with felony kidnapping in domestic violence case

Marcio Rosales-Zelaya, a 32-year-old Gypsum man, has been charged with felony kidnapping as well as misdemeanor assault and domestic violence charges after he allegedly took his girlfriend from her place of work and interfered with police efforts to locate the couple. Rosales-Zelaya made his first appearance Tuesday afternoon in Eagle County court after he was arrested for allegedly physically abusing and kidnapping his girlfriend, his second round of domestic violence charges in the last year. On June 20, the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report from the victim’s father that he believed Rosales-Zelaya was “going to kill her” after they had gotten into a dispute the night before, according to an affidavit detailing the incident.

Wanted felons arrested in routine Eagle County traffic stops

Two wanted felons were identified and arrested last month through routine traffic stops conducted along Interstate 70 by the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office and the Vail Police Department. The two men were wanted on felony charges of assault and sexual assault before they were caught speeding on I-70, according to a recent press release from the Eagle County Sheriff’s Office. Jesus Millan Ramirez, 45, of Arizona, was wanted on felony aggravated assault charges for kidnapping and armed robbery when he was caught speeding near Vail on May 26.
