Palaszczuk wants federal government to pay for struggling tourism industry28/01/2021|6min
Annastacia Palaszczuk has called on the Morrison government to extend JobKeeper for the struggling Queensland tourism industry after closing the state s border to New South Wales during most of the Christmas holidays.
“We really need the federal government to think about extending JobKeeper for these industries that are doing it tough,” Ms Palaszczuk said.
Speaking from Cairns, Ms Palaszczuk today announced the opening of the state’s border to Greater Sydney from February 1 and encouraged residents to visit the Queensland regions.
“There’s about 10,000 businesses here in the Tropical North that are on JobKeeper at the moment. That’s going to have a huge impact on employment especially when JobKeeper ends at the end of March,” she said.
Instead, the states should put their hands in their pockets and spend more to help businesses, he said. Our federal economic support has delivered more than three times what the Palaszczuk government has committed to, Mr Frydenberg told Today.
Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says the JobKeeper program won t be extended to include struggling tourism operators.(Nine News) We d welcome the states putting their hands in their pockets and spending a little bit more in their own states as part of the economic recovery but, of course, when it comes to the tourism sector, I recognise they ve been doing it tough and will continue to monitor that situation very closely.
