Photo by Mary Looby On Horn Peak above The Thacher School, members of the Upper Ojai Search and Rescue team found a notebook left there by two hikers seeking the peak in 2013.   Notebook found about epic trek to Horn Peak A trail register left atop 3,332-foot Horn Peak more than seven years ago was found Feb. 6 by two Upper Ojai Search and Rescue team members who regularly hike in the area to stay in shape, improve area familiarization and stay aware of current trail conditions. A canister containing the register was placed on the peak on Oct. 27, 2013, by Ojai Valley News senior reporter Perry Van Houten and hiking companion Bardley Smith. With the old trail long-abandoned, the pair used GPS data and satellite images to find the peak. Van Houten’s “Ojai Valley Hiking Trails” column, reprinted here from Nov. 20, 2013, describes the adventure.

Ventura detectives arrest two men after serving search warrant Staff reports Ventura police arrested two men earlier this month after an investigation into suspected narcotics sales. On March 5, detectives with the narcotics unit of the Ventura Police Department served a search warrant on a home in the 700 block of Arbor Avenue, the agency reported. The search effort also included a K-9 police dog and patrol personnel. During the search and subsequent investigation, detectives seized methamphetamine, evidence of narcotics sales and a loaded firearm found inside the home. The primary suspect, David Aklan Moreno, 35, who lives in the residence, was arrested on suspicion of a felony firearms violation and a misdemeanor drug possession offense. Moreno is a convicted felon barred from having firearms, authorities said. He was booked into Ventura County jail with bail set at $100,000, booking records show, and has subsequently been released on a bail bond.

Man sentenced 22 years for 2017 shooting death in Oxnard An Oxnard man has been sentenced to 22 years in state prison for the fatal shooting of another Oxnard man in 2017. Jonathan Zambrano, now 31, had pleaded guilty last month to voluntary manslaughter. He also admitted to personally using a firearm during the shooting, according to the Ventura County District Attorney s Office. He was sentenced Friday in Ventura County Superior Court. The victim, Albert Salazar, was 24. On the night of July 19, 2017, both men were standing outside a house in the 1300 block of West Guava Street when Zambrano pulled out a gun and shot Salazar once, prosecutors said. Salazar was driven by a private party to the Oxnard Police Department parking lot, where first aid was provided until he was transported by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center. He later died at the hospital. Zambrano was arrested three days later.
