An appellate court Wednesday overturned a Ventura County judge s ruling blocking the release of certain police misconduct records made public under a 2018 law.
The three-justice panel in the 2nd District Court of Appeal s Division Six, located in downtown Ventura, reversed the trial court s judgment and dissolved a court order opening up the records to the public for the first time.
Ventura County was the last jurisdiction in the state where police unions were challenging the scope of Senate Bill 1421 over privacy concerns and claims the law was not retroactive. The bill took effect Jan. 1, 2019.
Man, 48, tried to lure 17-year-old girl for sex in Ventura, police allege
Ventura authorities arrested a 48-year-old Los Angeles County man who allegedly tried to sexually lure an underage girl working at a local business.
The incident unfolded Feb. 6 when the manager of a Ventura business called authorities, according to the Ventura Police Department. The manager reported that a 17-year-old girl who worked for the business was being harassed by an adult customer.
The customer had bought the teen flowers and given her his phone number indicating he wanted to meet her, according to police. The business, which is not being identified to protect the victim, is located in west Ventura, officials said.

Trust and estate litigators, and mediators, are buzzing over a recent decision from the California Court of Appeal that validates mandatory mediation of trust disputes.
In
Breslin v. Breslin (Case No. B301382, decided January 26, 2021), the appellate court held that a California probate judge may order the private mediation of trust disputes and then disallow the objections of any nonparticipating parties to a settlement agreement reached in mediation.
The upshot of the case, assuming the opinion becomes final, is that probate judges may be more inclined to require pre-trial mediation and parties will need to participate to avoid waiving their beneficial interests.
