York Theatre Royal set for haunted season of fright nights

YORK Theatre Royal is launching a ‘haunted’ autumn season of plays – from Dracula and The Hounds of the Baskervilles to The Legend of Sleepy Hollow – all ‘sponsored’ by the theatre’s resident ghost. A spokesman said that as nights began to draw in, the theatre would be filling its stage with spirits and shadows in The Haunted Season. “Award-winning kings of comedy La Navet Bete will sink their teeth into Dracula: The Bloody Truth,’ (24-25 Sept) which mixes slapstick with carefully-crafted comedy and a healthy dose of things going wrong as the action moves from dark and sinister Transylvania to the ‘awkwardly charming seaside town of Whitby.

STAR: Wendi Peters is set to star in the famous horror FORMER soap favourite Wendi Peters is set to star in a theatre production of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Peters, 53, from Blackburn, shot to fame while portraying Cilla Battersby-Brown on Coronation Street between 2003 and 2007. The adapted show will take place in October at Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford and will see another former Corrie star, Bill Ward, co-star alongside Peters. The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a horror in which Ichabod Crane is reimagined as an English professor and turncoat during the Revolutionary War, who awakens in the 21st century and encounters the Headless Horseman, a felled mercenary who Crane had decapitated 250 years earlier.

Announced before there was any real clarity on the roadmap to reopening, producers Grey Area Theatre Company were the definition of pragmatic – saying that if live audiences weren t allowed into their venue, they d stream the entire run online. BWW Review: YOU ARE HERE, Southwark Playhouse

Southwark Playhouse reopens this week with in-person performances of You Are Here. Originating in the US, this is the UK premiere of a new musical by Neil Bartram and Brian Hill, presented by The Grey Area Theatre Company and directed by Matthew Rankcom. The show is of a pleasant length to ease oneself back into theatre, coming in at 90 minutes with no interval.
