Slew of projects marks Penrith s transition into major hub

Architecture news & editorial desk The City of Penrith has begun a major development program by kick-starting a raft of projects that will not only revitalise its CBD but also transform the area into a major commercial centre. Given the city’s close proximity to the new Nancy-Bird International Airport at Badgerys Creek, the Penrith City Council hopes to capitalise on the opportunities presented by the airport, the surrounding aerotropolis as well as metro rail connectivity by attracting businesses from Sydney CBD, which is located about 50km away. The Council recently announced leading Australian architecture studio Woods Bagot as the winner of a Design Excellence Competition to reinvigorate the former Council Chambers at 129-133 Henry Street into a new commercial building.

Show Fullscreen How the scheme will look when completed Woods Bagot has been given the green light by Bristol council for a £175m mixed-use proposal at a site on the edge of the city centre. The Soapworks district will centre around the grade II-listed Victorian former base of soap and candle firm Christopher Thomas & Brothers, which has more recently served as homeware showroom for city department store Gardiner Haskins. The architect was appointed in 2019 after developer First Base bought the site earlier that year with a view to creating a scheme featuring modern workspace, new homes, an apartment hotel, cafés and restaurants – in conjunction with the council.
