LAKESIDE    The fragrant, violet flowers that annually bloom on nearly two dozen jacaranda trees on Woodside Avenue in Lakeside look to be on their way out. And many residents of the rural East County community are feeling kind of blue about it. The jacaranda trees were planted in 2012 on the vacant lot west of the Lakeside Sheriff’s station by a group of AmeriCorps volunteers under the watchful eye of unofficial Lakeside historian Betty “Scoop” McMillen and a group called “Mile of Trees Lakeside.” Nearly 10 years ago, the Lakeside Garden Club donated $400 to purchase 24 trees and fertilizer. The Mile of Trees group bought small 5-gallon trees, only 3-feet tall, with hopes that the jacarandas “would grow really fast,” McMillen said.
