ALBEMARLE Co., Va. (WVIR) - Albemarle County is getting ready to submit more broadband projects to the Virginia Telecommunication Initiative (VATI).
The 2022 projects are due in September, but the countyâs broadband authority wants to hear from the public about future proposals.
Proposals are due in late July, and the county is hoping to have specifics for its broadband requests.
âMy goal is to work with CVEC Firefly and other potential ISPâs and make sure that on July 27th we have more than just here are our areas,â said the county Director of IT Mike Culp. âI would like to be like to even target it down to the address level.â

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, Va. (WVIR) - Virginiaâs teachers will soon be evaluated by a new standard: cultural competency. Itâs something that Albemarle County Public Schools has required for years.
Albemarle County Public Schools began its culturally responsive teaching certification in 2016. Teachers and administrators say students attitudes toward learning and success in the classroom have both seen major improvements.
âCulturally responsive teaching is about a mindset shift,â Albemarle High School Media Center Director and Former Teacher Monica Laux explained.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - Pleas for policing reform in Charlottesville are now coming from a group that advises City Council.
As calls for changes to policing ring through the streets of Charlottesville, the cityâs Human Rights Commission is calling on City Council to act.
The HRC sent out this four-page statement on the most recent killings by police.
âWe also wanted the statement to be more than a statement of solidarity,â said Kathryn Laughon, who serves as the commissionâs vice-chair. âWe think that itâs time for Charlottesville to stand up as a national leader in reimagining public safety.â

After years of planning, physical work is now progressing on the first phase of the Southwood Redevelopment. Albemarle County is seeking funding to in the form of a $1 million Community Development Block Grant.

WASHINGTON D.C. (WVIR) - Senator Tim Kaine is reintroducing the Veterans Medical Marijuana Safe Harbor Act.
This would allow doctors at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to prescribe medical marijuana in states that have programs available.
Senator Kaine stresses the importance of making federal and state law the same.
“There’s an equity issue because if state laws in some locations allow medical marijuana but the federal law is unclear then doctors have their hands tied”, Kaine said.
