ANDROSCOGGIN VALLEY â On the last Monday in May, the country takes a moment to honor those men and women who died in service to the country. From the American Revolution to the Global War on Terror, an estimated 1.3 million Americans have given what Lincoln called âtheir last full measure of devotionâ to preserve the freedom we all enjoy.
The areaâs military service organizations will visit the cemeteries and monuments over the Memorial Day weekend to honor their fallen comrades. For those able to join them in mourning those local residents who made the ultimate sacrifice, the dates and times are listed below. Times are approximate and may vary depending on weather.

Haverstraw: Annual Memorial Day Watchfire at Bowline Point Park is hosted by the Vietnam Veterans of America. Those who wish to attend can gather beginning at 11 p.m. The watchfire will be lit at midnight.
Over the weekend and on May 31, local cities and organizations will hold ceremonies to honor the nationâs veterans who have either fallen in combat or have otherwise died.
Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971. It was originally known as Decoration Day and originated in the years following the Civil War, according to the History Channel.

Killeen
At 9 a.m. Monday, a virtual ceremony will take place from the Central Texas State Veterans Cemetery. It is being put on by the Area Veterans Advisory Committee (AVAC). The ceremony will take place on Zoom at http://bit.ly/MemDay21. The event is not open to the public due to the coronavirus pandemic, but will shown live on Zoom.
