General Omar Bradley and the remaking of the Veterans Administration

VA History Office  General Omar Bradley and the remaking of the Veterans Administration General Omar Bradley in 1945 before he took over as VA Administrator. Within days of Germany’s surrender in May 1945, General Omar N. Bradley received word of his next assignment: he had been handpicked by President Harry S. Truman to replace Frank T. Hines as the next head of the Veterans Administration. For Bradley, who had commanded the 12th Army Group, the largest American fighting force ever assembled, in the campaign that liberated France and brought Germany to its knees, the president’s summons came as a shock. As he recalled in his autobiography, “I knew absolutely nothing about the Veterans Administration.” (1)

Radiation Exposure and Liver Flukes: Little-Known Veterans Issues Get Attention in Congress

(Photo: DVIDS) 7 May 2021 When Robert Celestial arrived on Lowja Island in the Marshall Islands Enewetak Atoll in 1977, he was given a shovel and gloves and told to get to work. Like his fellow troops, he waded into the muck at the bottom of an atomic bomb crater and began digging. He was dressed in shorts. We were young soldiers. We didn t know what we were doing, Celestial told Military.com last year. So many of my friends have passed away. Since at least 2018, Celestial has worked for passage of the Mark Takai Atomic Veterans Healthcare Parity Act, a bill that would recognize hundreds of veterans who participated in decontamination and containment work in Enewetak from 1977 to 1980 as atomic veterans.

Busting the Bureaucratic Myth, One Amazing Achievement at a Time

Busting the Bureaucratic Myth, One Amazing Achievement at a Time Federal employees accomplished a lot last year it’s time to give them the respect they deserve. May 3, 2021 02:58 PM ET Federal employees protect our health, safety and well-being providing us with everything from disaster relief and environmental cleanup to new medical treatments and vaccines.  Yet all too often, federal employees are disrespected as uninspired bureaucrats and robotic paper pushers, or dismissed as members of a shady “deep state” working to undermine our democracy. Recent policies like the now-repealed executive order that would have made it easier to fire career civil servants is only the latest example of a decades-long pattern of deriding federal employees that has caused public trust in government to reach a historic low.
