Three diseases added to list of Agent Orange effects
Vietnam veterans with parkinsonism, bladder cancer and hypothyroidism may file claims
With the recent passage of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, three new conditions have been added to the Agent Orange Presumptive List.
Parkinsonism, bladder cancer and hypothyroidism are now listed as being associated with exposure to certain herbicide agents.
Agent Orange is an herbicide that was used by the United States to kill vegetation in the Republic of Vietnam during the war. The herbicide was named for the distinctive orange band painted on the storage barrels.
Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam between Feb. 28, 1961, and May 7, 1975, and who have a current diagnosed condition that is on the VA Agent Orange Presumptive List have a lower burden of proof regarding exposure to Agent Orange in order to receive benefits.
Bikers make van deal
They might be motorcycle enthusiasts, but members of the PIGs civic group were more than happy to purchase a van last week. The new 12-person van will be used by the Douglas County Veterans Service Office to transport veterans from the Northland . Written By: Maria Lockwood | ×

Back, Douglas County Veterans Commission Chairman John Robinson and members of the PIGs motorcycle group look on. Thanks to the PIGs, approximately $16,000 was raised to purchase a new van for the county. The 12-passenger van will be used to transport area veterans to and from the VA hospital in Minneapolis.

Revere’s Director of Veterans Services and Purple Heart recipient Marc Silvestri is hoping to continue his service to others as he seeks to be elected to the 19th Suffolk House of Representative seat vacated by longtime Speaker DeLeo. Silvestri said, “I have thrived from the privilege of serving others and changing people’s lives. And serving as our next State Representative affords me the opportunity to serve a wider range of people and have an even greater impact on our community. When Speaker DeLeo announced that he may be stepping down, I had some honest conversations with my family and friends and was met, time and again, with votes of confidence. Many people remarked that it was a natural progression on the service I have already done.”

This was a year of many firsts, Becker County Board Chairman Ben Grimsley said in his State of the County Address on Dec. 15.
“For example, for the first time, Becker County had employees work from home, and 170 employees logged in to work every work day, many of them from the Human Services Department,” he said.

JEERS to the urge to avoid a messy election, circumventing democracy, in picking someone to serve the remaining year of Lawrence Mayor Daniel Riveraâs second term.
The City Councilâs Ordinance and Intergovernmental Relations Committee is set to meet tomorrow to talk about seeking state permission to dodge a city charter requirement to hold a special election for mayor.
Rivera, elected to his first term in 2013, would be headed into his final year in office were he not recently named CEO of the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency. He addressed the council last week, formally giving notice of his resignation as of Friday, Jan. 8.
