The Sioux Falls City Council approved an ordinance gifting a plot of land near Axtell Middle School to an organization planning to build a tiny-home community to help homeless veterans.
The Veterans Community Project first spoke to the council about the project in April, although discussions had been ongoing since 2019 and were delayed by COVID-19.
While initial plans called for 30 of the homes to be constructed along with a central community center, the gifting agreement attached to the ordinance said only 15 tiny homes would be constructed on the property, which is less than 2 acres.
VCP must begin construction within two years to retain control of the property, according to the agreement, and construction must finish within three years of when it starts.
