Florida lawmakers hand DeSantis another win with approval of gambling deal

TALLAHASSEE Florida s Republican-controlled Legislature on Wednesday approved a sweeping gambling deal that will bring sports betting to the nation s third largest state for the first time.
The passage, which will undoubtedly face legal challenges, is a big win for Gov. Ron DeSantis, who personally lobbied state lawmakers to approve the deal. It also caps a series of legislative victories for DeSantis on issues ranging from clamping down on Big Tech, elections and racial justice protesters. The overwhelming approval of the gambling deal, however, didn t come without some concessions and last-minute lobbying by the governor.
Gov. Ron DeSantis - who has taken political donations as high as $5 million - signed a law last week making it a crime to donate more than $3,000 to a Florida amendment drive.
The Chamber recognized 10 Senators and 13 Representatives.
The Florida Chamber of Commerce has awarded nearly two dozen lawmakers with its “2021 Distinguished Advocate award for their work advancing the Chamber’s legislative priorities.
“These legislators showcased extraordinary leadership as architects, sponsors, or key supporters of legislation that helped grow Florida’s economy and were included in the Florida Chamber’s 2021 Jobs and Competitiveness Agenda,” Florida Chamber of Commerce President and CEO
Mark Wilson said. “Together, with the support of a united business community, these efforts will spur further economic growth, job creation and a more competitive Florida.”
