Proposed bill reduces Iowa Workforce Development unemployment benefits

Des Moines Register Unemployed Iowans would receive less money from Iowa Workforce Development if a bill working its way through the Legislature is approved and signed into law by Gov. Kim Reynolds. The Iowa House Labor Committee approved House Study Bill 203 early Tuesday. The debate was contentious and lasted more than 5 hours. If you think this was a fight, wait until it gets on the floor, said Rep. Bruce Hunter, D-Des Moines, the party s ranking member on the committee.  The legislation is eligible for a vote on the House floor. If signed into law, the legislation would take effect in July 2022.

Letters to the editor: Iowa GOP wants to fast-track voter suppression

Letters to the editor: Iowa GOP wants to fast-track voter suppression Letters to the editor Iowa GOP wants to fast-track voter suppression Our governor avoids mask mandates because, as she keeps repeating, Iowans do the right thing. In 2017 Secretary of State Paul Pate said,”It’s about the bad guys trying to mess with the system,” (Waterloo-Cedar Rapids Courier). Republicans say this sort of thing despite massive, costly investigations showing fraud is so infrequent as to be laughable.

Iowa Republicans advance penalties for cities that defund police departments

Bill to penalize cities that defund police advances, despite criticism Republicans in both chambers moved forward with a measure to deny all state funding to cities and counties that reduce their police budgets, one of the elements of Reynolds bill. The measure would cities and counties that submit justification for the reduction in their budget, such as a decline in one-time expenses or a decrease in their population, to earn an exception to the funding ban.  There is clearly an orchestrated effort going on in our country   with heavy financial backing   to destabilize our communities, our governments, create terror in our streets, intimidate people and assault the rule of law, Rep. Steven Holt, R-Denison, said Tuesday.
