FRANKFORT A group of Democratic women in the state legislature unveiled a sweeping plan Tuesday to expand health care access for Kentucky mothers and children and invited their conservative colleagues to join their effort to make pregnancy and childbirth safer.
Dubbed the Kentucky Maternal and Infant Health Project, the state House Democratic Women s Caucus has put together a slate of 21 proposed bills that focus on five key topics: care for families, health equity, access to care, mental health and incarceration.
The group s overriding message: Improvement is possible, if enough state lawmakers are willing to take action. Kentucky is in a maternal mortality crisis, said Rep. Lisa Willner of Louisville, the caucus s chairwoman, as she stood on the cold grounds of the Kentucky Capitol on Tuesday morning alongside other members of the group to announce their plan.

Democrats in the Illinois House of Representatives made history on Jan. 13 when they elected the first Black lawmaker to serve as House Speaker and ended the reign of Rep. Michael Madigan, the longest-serving statehouse speaker in the country.
But the decision to elect Rep. Emanuel “Chris” Welch, from Hillside, meant that members of the House Democratic caucus were ultimately unable to unite behind any of the three female lawmakers who came out as early contenders for the job.

Another Speaker with a history of integrity problems. Great.

I’m old enough to remember Rich being apoplectic over what Amy Grant said over the summer. Now he’s cheering on a known girl puncher and sexual harasser. I know this will get deleted or won’t make it past the filter but I’m going to say it anyway.
His first order of business should be to evict the Republicans from their prime offices behind the chamber and let the Democrats reclaim the Speaker’s corridor.
