Homeless Man Charged with Arson in Pacific Palisades Fire in California

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office charged a homeless man, Ramon Santos Rodriguez, 48, on Tuesday with arson in connection with a large brush fire that erupted in the hills above Los Angeles and threatened the Pacific Palisades and Topanga.

Local ABC affiliate KABC-7 reported:
An arson suspect who had been in custody since Sunday in connection with the 1,158-acre brush fire in Pacific Palisades was identified Tuesday morning.
The Internal Revenue Service Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides free income tax preparation services to households earning less than $57,000 annually.
IRS-certified volunteers provide free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing to qualified individuals countywide as part of this program sponsored by the IRS in partnership with the county s Center for Financial Empowerment.
However, the number of available volunteers is too small to accommodate the county s needs. Solis recommended seeing whether homeless services providers and even county employees could be certified to help, potentially co-locating in homeless shelters, housing sites and Project Roomkey and Homekey sites.
Taking a holistic approach that wraps case management into the process could boost the chance that stimulus checks are effective in helping people get back on a path to a more stable financial situation, Solis suggested.
A recent report by the county s Department of Public Health found an 84% increase in overdoses among people experiencing homelessness in recent years. The DPH report made clear that drug overdoses are having a devastating impact on one of our most vulnerable communities, Kuehl said. This motion will expand proven programs and make sure that our unhoused residents can access them. It represents another step forward as we build a care first system for all of our residents.
