SLO County evicts homeless from lot above Pirate’s Cove May 14, 2021 By JOSH FRIEDMAN As part of San Luis Obispo County’s effort to remake the area surrounding Pirate’s Cove, officials on Thursday evicted the homeless who had been living in an encampment at the parking lot above the popular beach. In March, the SLO County Board of Supervisors decided to incorporate Cave Landing into the county parks systems. Cave Landing is the cliffside area that leads to Pirate’s Cove, which had traditionally been a nude beach and scene for counterculture in SLO County. On Thursday, workers launched a cleanup of Cave Landing, which includes removing garbage and graffiti, as well as a redesign of the parking lot.

A growing encampment at the parking lot was dispersed –Cleanup of the Cave Landing Parking Lot above Pirates Cove began on Thursday, San Luis Obispo County Parks recently announced. The parking lot was closed to vehicles and was set to reopen at 4 p.m. on Friday. This is the first step in transitioning the former vacant land into a County Park Natural Area. On March 16th, the Board of Supervisors approved adding the land to the County Park System and accepted a grant that, along with other funding, will allow the County to restore the parking lot by adding natural colored rock and gravel to create a better parking surface, install trash cans, place boulders to protect cultural resources, add bioswales to manage the drainage of the site and install accessible parking with an overlook area.

County to begin clean-up of parking lot at Pirate s Cove on Thursday and last updated 2021-05-13 01:40:48-04 San Luis Obispo County officials will begin cleaning up the Cave Landing parking lot above Pirate s Cove on Thursday. The parking lot will be closed to vehicles from 8 a.m. on May 13 to 4 p.m. on May 14. Park rangers and contractors will be cleaning up trash and debris and CAL FIRE will begin fuel reduction in the area. County officials say this is the first step in transitioning the site to the county park system. Over the next few months, officials say the site will be cleared of trash and graffiti with the exception of the interior of the cave area, which requires further consultation to determine if there are any cultural artifacts under the graffiti that need to be protected.
