Rescue efforts continue in the Western Cape after winte

Rescue efforts have continued in the Western Cape where heavy rainfall has caused severe flooding and destruction in the province’s first severe winter storm.  By Friday morning, hundreds of people had been evacuated, two people confirmed dead and two people reported missing after the storm struck on Wednesday.  The Overberg region, in particular Swellendam, Bredasdorp, Struisbaai, Riviersonderend and surrounding areas has been most affected. Large parts remain flooded.  According to Wayne Venter, a forecaster at the South African Weather Service, the storm is pushing rainfall across the south coast of the province and has moved into the southern Cape Winelands towards the Garden Route.

A number of CapeNature reserves have had to close due to a winter storm sweeping across the Western Cape. The heavy rains and strong winds resulted in flooding in many rural towns and, by Thursday, two people had died, two others had been reported missing and hundreds evacuated. In Struisbaai, evacuations have been carried out since the storm hit the coastal town, with Gift of the Givers requested to supply humanitarian aid to affected residents. SAPS members in the Southern Cape and Overberg are deployed in numbers to assist with disaster management and the rescue operation in areas affected by flooding and severe weather conditions

Father, daughter rescued in Cape storm floods, nature reserves closed By IOL Reporter Share Cape Town – A father and daughter were rescued this morning as large parts of the Overberg region remain flooded, with rain persisting in the area. Swellendam, Bredasdorp, Struisbaai, Riversonderend and the surrounding areas continue to be the most affected, Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning MEC Anton Bredell said in an update at noon today. The search is continuing for two missing persons, with rescuers continuing to pull people from the water. No further fatalities have been confirmed beyond the two from Wednesday evening in Bonnievale, after their car overturned.
