Alna’s Maria Jenness always wonders when she finds a shoe on the side of the road: Where is the other one?
The trash she would see on her running route inspired Jenness, who works for Maine Island Trail Association, to spearhead a town-wide roadside cleanup this spring. She spread the word via Facebook and in selectmen’s Zoom meetings. Residents signed up for stretches of road and, whenever worked for them, picked up the recycleables and trash.

Sharon Jacques said her family made a lot of good memories on its 1988 Cobia bowrider
Haley Morgan. And Jacques, husband Corey and their daughter Haley, the boat’s namesake, were having a beautiful day with friends on Damariscotta Lake in Jefferson July 9, 2017. Then he had a sudden, and fatal, cardiac event.
Maybe having an automated external defibrillator (AED) on board would have made a difference, or not, the Wiscasset woman said in a phone interview April 15. But boats do not tend to carry them, because AED’s cost a lot, she said.

I took a chance on Saturday.
After all it was a warm sunny day, the perfect day to begin the outdoor chores season. It just seemed to be the right thing to do.
So, I gathered up the hated snow shovels, climbed the stairs to the garage’s loft, and them in the corner. To compound the effort, I dusted the cobwebs away and pulled the lawn mower from under the stairs, replacing it with the snowblower. Then it was time to wheel the gas grill out of the shadows, shake off the cover and spend an hour or so cleaning gunk off the innards.
