WORCESTER Ten community-based organizations in Berkshire, Middlesex and Worcester counties will benefit from $100,000 in grants made by Fallon Health to help with COVID-19 recovery.
The grants support agencies that assist populations that are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity as a result of the pandemic or that provide services to seniors to help them overcome or mitigate social isolation.
The following organizations have received funding: Community Harvest Project’s Healthy Hunger Relief to Minimize COVID-19 Community Impact in Grafton, Pernet Family Health Services’ Meeting the Most Basic Needs of Worcester’s At-Risk Families program in Worcester, Regional Environmental Council’s Growing Community Food Security through Worcester Urban Farming in Worcester, Spanish American Center’s Reaching Out to Elders in the Age of COVID program in Leominster, Genesis Club House, Inc’s Mental Health Support for Seniors in Worcester, United Way of Tri-
To start, it may all depend on how things go in Worcester.
UMass Medical School students – both nursing students and the School of Medicine students they’ve trained to give shots – began administering the first vaccines on Jan. 11 to the first few hundred police officers, firefighters and other first responders in Worcester and six adjacent towns.
Before too long, leaders of the effort will review what worked best and what didn’t in order to gauge how such an effort could be replicated elsewhere in the state.
The program may be tapping into a broad eagerness in the medical community to play a role in helping to bring an eventual end to the coronavirus pandemic, which has killed more than 400,000 Americans.

Worcester Fitness at 440 Grove St. had to shut down for about four months early in the pandemic and has since remade much of its space to be safer. Equipment is now 14 feet apart, members are required to wear masks at all times and must sanitize equipment between each use. For those who might be forgetful or not realize how close they are to another member, Worcester Fitness’ staff provides quick but gentle enough reminders. Everything is running, but nothing is running like we re used to it running,” said Kat Butterfield, the gym’s director of operations.
Those precautions have helped keep Worcester Fitness afloat, but it hasn t been able to work magic at a time when countless businesses have had to close temporarily or permanently because of the pandemic.
Outside of restaurants and bars, gyms may be the businesses affected the most by the coronavirus pandemic, with far fewer people willing to take a chance on getting infected by working out inside next to others.
