Minister of Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare says any Nigerian athlete who does not show up for the national trials will not represent the country at the track and field events of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
Dare said this while addressing athletes at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja, in preparation for their trip to the United States for meets.
The minister who assured the athletes of the government’s support, said both home-based and foreign-based athletes must present themselves for the national trials in June before the Olympics.
The Nigerian delegation hopes to secure qualification for the relay events of the Olympics in the US, after missing out on the World Relays in Silesia, Poland.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will on Tuesday (today) declare the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival open.
According to the programme of events for the opening ceremony, Prof Osinbajo will pay homage to the Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, before proceeding to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium for the opening of the national sports event.
The programme, which starts at 7pm and runs for two hours, will showcase the rich Edo cultural heritage, with musician Fire Boy also performing at the event.
Minister of Youth and Sports Development Sunday Dare is expected to officially welcome the athletes, while Governor Godwin Obaseki and his deputy Philip Shaibu will also speak on the festival.

Minister of Youths and Sports Development Sunday Dare has expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance with COVID-19 protocols by athletes and officials participating in the 20th National Sports Festival (NSF) in Benin.
Dare said this on Tuesday in Benin shortly after he was conducted round the games village by University of Benin (UNIBEN) Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lilian Salami, in company of Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo.
UNIBEN is the official camp for athletes and officials for the festival.
“We are satisfied with the compliance with all COVID-19 protocols; we had a brief from the state COVID-19 Incident Manager, Dr Andrew Obi, who told us that about 6, 500 athletes are around for the games.
