Medical career beckons for Japan rugby star Kenki Fukuoka

The final of Japan’s Top League club competition on Sunday will mark the end of one of world rugby’s most distinguished and influential recent playing careers.
Japan winger Kenki Fukuoka will retire after the final between his Panasonic Wild Knights and Suntory Sungoliath, ending his playing career at its zenith to pursue a career as a doctor.
Fukuoka retired from international 15-a-side rugby after the 2019 World Cup in Japan and hoped to end his career by representing his country in sevens at the Tokyo Olympics. But the postponement of the Tokyo Games last year made that impossible.
North Korea withdraws from World Cup qualification

SEOUL (AP) The Asian Football Confederation has announced North Korea has pulled out of qualification for the 2022 World Cup.
“The (AFC) has today confirmed the withdrawal of the DPR Korea Football Association from the Asian Qualifiers,” the AFC said in a statement on Sunday.
Pyongyang has not yet given an official reason for pulling out of next month’s qualifiers for the tournament, to be held in Qatar in November and December 2022, but South Korean media has reported that it is because of concerns over COVID-19.
Due to the spread of the virus, there have been no qualifiers in Asia since November 2019 and in order to reduce travel as the games resume, the AFC has ruled that all group matches in the second round of qualification will be played in hubs.
Weather halts Nelson with K.H. Lee on verge of win, PGA spot

McKINNEY, Texas (AP) The AT&T Byron Nelson is in a final-round weather delay with K.H. Lee leading by three shots and three holes from qualifying for next week’s PGA Championship.
The players had been slogging through a steady downpour for about an hour when a lightning strike forced the delay Sunday at TPC Craig Ranch. The new home of the Nelson is the third different course in the past four events.
The leaders started several hours early to try to get in the round with increasing rain in the forecast. The leaders got through most of the front nine before the heavier rain arrived.
Phillips, Mitchell added to NZ list of contracted players

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) White ball batsman Glenn Phillips and allrounder Daryl Mitchell have been included for the first time on New Zealand Cricket’s list of centrally contracted players.
But test spinner Ajaz Patel, who will leave next week with the New Zealand squad for England, has been dropped from the 20-strong list after only one year.
The list is compiled by New Zealand coach Gary Stead and selector Gavin Larsen, who rank players on performances in all three formats, with tests receiving a double weighting. Stead and Larsen also consider potential future performance and players receive a retainer based on their ranking.
