The Skanner News - Contractor Selected for Two-Year Morrison Bridge Painting Project

Published: 23 July 2021 Multnomah County has selected Southern Road and Bridge of Tarpon Springs, Florida as the general contractor for the upcoming Morrison Bridge painting project. Bridge work is scheduled to begin in September 2021 and be completed in summer 2023. Southern Road and Bridge submitted the lowest responsive (complete and accurate) bid of $18,243,777. Bids were submitted by six contractors. Mindful of the environment Amazingly, this will be the first time the Morrison Bridge river spans have been painted since the bridge opened 63 years ago in 1958. Steel bridges are typically repainted every 20 to 30 years. The contractor will remove the original lead-based paint from steel surfaces on the four river spans and the easternmost river span that extends over the Eastbank Esplanade.

Buffer Zones Keep Agricultural Pollution From Rivers

Jul 30, 2021 Photo: Ford, Brad Greater buffer zones around bodies of water and more consistent enforcement of water protection regulations are needed to reduce agriculture-based pollution in the Western U.S., a recent review from Oregon State University found. Prior research has shown that agricultural pollution, both from croplands and rangelands, is the cause of 48% of water-quality impairment in U.S. surface waters, which in turn disrupts habitat for fish and insects and reduces biodiversity in aquatic environments. The OSU paper, featured earlier this month on the cover of the journal Water, reviewed more than 40 case studies on the impacts of agriculture on water quality. Specifically, researchers looked at studies that related agricultural management practices to aquatic responses in rivers and streams; and related livestock rangeland uses to biotic responses within rivers and streams as well as in riparian zones, the areas bordering rivers and streams.
