In the two years after 95 percent of Wheaton Warrenville South High School s class of 2018 graduated on time, 28 percent of those who attended Illinois community colleges had to enroll in remedial courses because they were not prepared for college-level classes, according to data from the Illinois State Board of Education.
Data from the class that graduated in 2018 shows 85 percent of Wheaton Warrenville South students enrolled in two- or four-year programs at a college or university within 12 months of graduating high school, compared to 75 percent across the state. After 16 months, the rate was 86 percent.
Of the Wheaton Warrenville South graduates attending Illinois community colleges, 0.8 percent took remedial courses in reading, while 25 percent took them in math and 9 percent took them in communications.

Of the Waubonsie Valley graduates attending Illinois community colleges, 3 percent took remedial courses in reading, while 30 percent took them in math and 11 percent took them in communications.

Of the Wheaton North graduates attending Illinois community colleges, 3 percent took remedial courses in reading, while 16 percent took them in math and 10 percent took them in communications.

Scott Helton was a school principal at heart.
At Addison Trail High School, he was the kind of principal you d see at sporting events or theater productions. To promote a school performance of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, he was willing to dress up as an Oompa Loompa.
Helton remained a larger-than-life figure in the school community when he moved out of the principal s office and took the helm of DuPage High School District 88. When I went to high school, I couldn t tell you the name of my principal, school board President Donna Craft Cain said. But I think those kids did, and even when he became superintendent, he was still in the schools as much as he could be.
