Whatever you believe | News, Sports, Jobs - Williamsport Sun-Gazette

Robert O. Rolley Jr. Whatever you believe, I hope you agree that, in this season of both hurt and hope, these holidays are meant for us all to recognize what we mean to each other. No more so than now, when a disease threatens all of us while our best defense against it outside of science is each of us. Do you get that? Do you understand that, to wage a successful battle against this deadly virus, our hope for a bright future is directly tied to our mutual empathy … and decency? Indeed, during this just passed Hanukkah and now Christmas and upcoming New Year holidays, many family and friends will sacrifice their time to be together and their beloved traditions in order to protect each other.

National Weather Service: Holiday flooding possible | News, Sports, Jobs

Dec 23, 2020 City residents and others in the region need to monitor the weather as a hard-driving rain is expected to arrive Thursday afternoon and continue through Christmas Eve before stopping on Christmas morning, a forecaster said. “You should monitor forecasts and be alert for possible flood warnings,” said Steve Travis, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in State College. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop, he said. Warmer temperatures today into the low-50s combined with the 9 inches of snow left on the ground from a record-setting snowfall of 24.7 inches last week may caused localized flooding, he said.

City passes budget with tax increase – may reduce hike's size in January | News, Sports, Jobs

Dec 18, 2020 City Council passed a half-mill real estate tax increase and approved Mayor Derek Slaughter’s $29 million 2021 budget Thursday, but with an eye toward reopening the budget in January to see if the size of the tax hike can further reduced. Council and the administration set the tax rate at 16.22 mills, but upon getting information from Norman Lubin, city solicitor, learned they have until Feb. 15 to reopen, discuss options and adopt a revised budget. If nothing is done, the half-mill is $50 more per tax bill for households assessed at $100,000. To reach a quarter-mill would require finding $217,000 more in reductions, Council President Randall J. Allison said. Reaching a zero-tax-increase budget would mean $434,000 in reductions, he said.
