It’s a creation of beauty, a priceless piece of artwork by Severin Roesen. Roesen, an artist active in Williamsport during its heyday as a lumber capital, is known for his still life paintings of fruits and flowers, sometimes with a bird’s next tucked in somewhere, often with a beer glass or wine flute included. On June 27, 1895, the Williamsport Sun and Banner wrote a story under the headline, “An Interesting Williamsport Genius Recalled by His Works.” “His studio was much frequented by his friends, who would sit all day with this genial, well read and generous companion, smoking his pipes and drinking his beer, and he was seldom without this beverage,” the forerunner to the Williamsport Sun-Gazette reported. “In one corner of the finished painting would always appear the faint outline of a beer glass, and when a customer objected to its presence, he would say, ‘Why, do you not like beer?’ and then take it out.”
