S. Clay Wilson, Taboo-Breaking Underground Cartoonist, Dies at 79
His drawings were so outrageous that, on first encountering them, his fellow cartoonist R. Crumb recalled feeling that “suddenly my own work seemed insipid.”

S. Clay Wilson, the most scabrous and rollicking of the underground cartoonists who first achieved notoriety as contributors to Zap Comix in the late 1960s, died on Sunday at his home in San Francisco. He was 79.

The Duke of Cumberland can also be seen in the 18th-century March of the Guards to Finchley, believes Jeremy Bell who has been studying the painting for years. Much has been written about the characters in the work created by William Hogarth just after the 1745 Jacobite rising but, until now, no-one has noticed the resemblance of two of them to Bonnie Prince Charles and the “Butcher”.

The artists’ projects are ready, and the Desert X team and board will identify a new opening date as soon as they believe it can be done safely.
‘Many Voices, Many Visions’ A new Arthur Ross Gallery exhibition features artworks from Penn’s collection that echo today’s social, political, and environmental upheaval. University Curator Lynn Marsden-Atlass curated the Arthur Ross Gallery’s current exhibition, “Many Voices, Many Visions”, which features 43 works from the Penn Art Collection.
Putting together an art exhibition in the middle of a pandemic is a particular challenge.
Instead of considering pieces in person, University Curator Lynn Marsden-Atlass chose the 43 artworks now on view at the Arthur Ross Gallery primarily by looking through the Penn Art Collection online archive. Working remotely as much as possible, Lynn Smith Dolby, university art collection manager, helped to locate the works.
