Each week I try to write about something that I hope is worth reading. And, although I mostly like to feature writings of some historical value, sometimes I get a little left of center, so to speak, and today just might be one of those days. Let’s just refer to it as a “throw it against the wall, and if it sticks, it’s done” spaghetti day. Perhaps we should begin with this newspaper. I do not know the actual circulation of The Logan Banner, Williamson Daily News or Coal Valley News, all of which my writings appear in weekly. What I do know is that there must be many people across the country who read the newspapers via the internet because I hear from a good many of them, some of whom reach out to me through Facebook, some by email, some by regular mail, and others by telephone. Dwight Williamson: Logan High School almost missed being on the island

One doesn’t have to be in downtown Logan to understand that the past is something that should not only be understood, but also appreciated for what transpired decades ago that could have changed all of what we identify with today. Sound confusing? Allow me to simplify the statement in an example. What if I told you that all of Logan Senior High School’s Midelburg Island history — including former legendary basketball coach Willie Akers’ four AAA state championships and his 427 coaching victories over a splendid 20-year career — never happened? No fieldhouse overflowing with thousands of cheering fans? No football field? No baseball or softball fields? Indeed, no high school, middle school or elementary school? What if … ?

Together again SALEM Matilda “Tillie” Stratton passed away Friday, December 11, 2020 at the age of 92. She was born March 4, 1928 to John and Mary (Pauline) Krizay in Niles, Ohio. She graduated from Goshen High School and was employed at Electric Furnace for over 30 years where she made many lasting friendships. She had a very gentle nature and a smile for everyone. Her husband, William Blaine Stratton, whom she married November 23, 1946, died February 3, 1995. Tillie valued family first, she raised seven children and had an expansive family of 16 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She grew up and later retired in the farmhouse that her father built and was proud to celebrate her parents’ Slovenian roots. Tillie was president of Slovenian Lodge 476 in Salem that was chartered by her grandparents, a 70-year member of the SNPJ, and could often be heard humming along to her favorite polkas.
