Only twenty-five miles of ocean separated the islands of O‘ahu and Moloka‘i, but to the reluctant travelers aboard the steamer
Kilauea, it felt as though it were a thousand leagues. The calm trade winds that cooled and gentled the land, when funneled through the narrow passage of the Kaiwi Channel, now turned violent and blustery. They raged the waters into ten-foot swells, as the engines of the Kilauea the little cattle boat looking as helpless on the waves as a piece of driftwood strained to keep the ship on its bearing. The journey from Honolulu had taken all of a very long night.
Walsh Retiring Thursday, Interim Chief Named in Great Barrington
After four decades of service to the town of Great Barrington as a police officer, Great Barrington Police Chief, William Walsh will officially retire from his position on December 24th. He served the last 37 as chief. Walsh’s final day of work will be Wednesday, Dec. 23rd, the day before his 65th birthday.
As the town’s search for a new police chief moves toward its final phase, town manager Mark Pruhenski has appointed Sgt. Paul Storti as interim chief. Storti has served with the Great Barrington Police Department for 25 years, and since 2010 has held the rank of sergeant. Storti will hold the position as interim chief until a search committee comes up with a permanent replacement for Walsh. The search for a new chief has been underway since early fall. GREAT BARRINGTON â Four decades of police work marked by strong leadership and a quiet but forceful personality comes to an end this week for town Police Chief William Walsh.
Walsh, 64, will officially retire Dec. 24, his birthday, since state law says public safety employees must not work beyond age 65. He signs off amid a flood of well-wishes and gratitude from town and state officials â including Gov. Charlie Baker.
Sgt. Paul Storti will take the helm as interim chief until a seven-member hiring committee chooses Walsh s replacement. Interviews for finalists in the search will be held Jan. 4 and Jan. 5, Town Manager Mark Pruhenski told the Select Board Monday.

Community Energy Grants scheme.
Funded under the National Retrofit Programme, it is now open for applications, offering grant support for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects throughout the country.
The scheme supports substantial investment in energy upgrades to homes and community and commercial buildings. This includes rented properties, businesses, sports and community facilities, public sector buildings and schools.
