The Gila County Board of Supervisors on May 4 accepted the resignations of its entire Fair and Racing Commission. The BOS also presented each of the commissioners with special recognition for their service â some members have served the county for 30 to 40 years.
While no specific reason for the groupâs resignation was presented at the May 4 meeting, speaking on behalf of the outgoing members, William Byrne, Fair and Racing Commission chair, said it was time for new blood to take the reins and help the use of the facility expand.
Resigning were Byrne, Christi Lavin, Melva Enders, Janet Cline, Floyd Livingood and Andy Hetrick.

Last fall, in my capacity as chair of the Independent Task Force on the Response to Sexual Abuse within the Diocese of Springfield, I wrote an op-ed providing an overview of the work the task force was undertaking with emphasis on the stakeholder input that we would be seeking.
I write now to affirm that the task force has been actively engaged and has made excellent progress in our data collection endeavor and in other phases of our work.
First, as we announced at a press conference on Jan. 8, we engaged the services of Stop It Now!, an independent professional organization in Northampton, to conduct focus groups with survivors of clergy sexual abuse. Obviously, there is no more important group from whom we need input than the men and women who have been sexually victimized by priests and other diocesan employees. We expect to receive the report from Stop It Now! on or about March 31, and it will certainly be an important element of our final report.

This Easter column was in the works when a love song played in my head. It served to remind me of God’s omnipresence:
“It’s Always You” Funny, it’s not a star I see, it’s always you.
If a breeze caresses me, it’s really you strolling by
If I hear a melody, it’s merely the way you sigh
Wherever you are you’re near me, you dare me to be untrue
Funny, each time I fall in love, It’s always you.
One year ago, most Christians missed Easter Sunday. Palm Sunday, one week before, begins Holy Week when the faithful slow down, take stock, recall and relive Christ’s passion. Believers will question their lives in faint hopes of justifying His sacrifice. This faith of ours, given at birth, or chosen, tells us that God created the world and everything in it.
